What are the different shapes of knife blades for?

Why are some knives curved and others have holes in them or shaped in funny ways?
What are some common shapes and what are their functions?

Small knives, 3” with a curve is a paring knife, used to peel fruits and veg. Paring knives can be straight ar with an inside or outside curve. Typically a chefs knife 8" or longer will have a blade wider at the handle end and taper to a point. Some chefs knives are curved to chop and slice in a rocking motion that follows the curve. Knives with holes or spots of nonstick material are designed to keep foods from sticking to the blade. A serrated or scalloped edge blade is for slicing from bread to meats. A tomato slicer is a skinny curved blade with fine teeth. Steak knives have a serrated edge and can be shaped with a rounded or pointed tip. A boning knife, to remove bones or filet fish is a thin flexible blade.

Is there any site to visit good sketch ups and renders in architecture?

Is there a Wordpress plugin that shows different sidebar widgets on different pages?

I’m looking for a Wordpress plugin that will allow me to assign certain sidebar widgets to certain pages. So for example on the homepage I might want all sidebars to show, but on the "About Me" page I might want only a sidebar with all of my contact information to show.

There’s a theme called atahualpa for WP. In this theme, you could put a text widget in the sidebar and it can change the text for each widget, i.e. different pages. You can also take out the sidebars for each page however you want to.

Recommendations for good photo editing software that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?

I am an at home photographer- I take pics of stuff I like and share them with family and friends. I want to purchase some good photo editing software for my computer-but I don’t have a lot of money to work with right now. Any suggestions?
Also: Does anyone have a recommendation for online photo sharing/storage sites? I am looking at Flickr, does anyone use it and do you like it?

For photo editing programs I’d recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements (less expensive and toned-down version of Photoshop). It’s really the best program you can get for around $100 when hunting for an image editing program.

I’d also recommend GIMP http://gimp.org/ — it’s free and contains a ton of great editing features.

Why do you have to remove carbon from filters when adding medications to your aquarium?

Is it because the carbon filters out the medication, or does the medication ruin the carbon in the filter, or what?

Thanks

Because the carbon will remove the medication from the water as it is filtered and so it will make it ineffective for treating the fishes’ disease. The fish will get hardly any of the meds because the charcoal will filter it out of the water. So, you must take the carbon out of the filter so that it continues to circulate and the fish will get the full effect of the medication in the water.

What is the best way to learn about Web Design & Digital Media?

Hi all, I would love to get into Web design & digital media and I was wondering what was the best way to learn how to use industry standard software such as: Dreamweaver, Flash & Photoshop in order for me to fulfill that interest?

I’m going to assume that when you say digital media you’re referring to creative content made on the computer. The best way to get into web design and digital media is to set a solid foundation.

For both, you will need to develop your design sense. This comes though exposure, experience, or study. I suggest that you take a basic class in graphic design through a continuing education program at a local college. This is better than sitting at home by yourself muddling through, because classmates and instructors will present new viewpoint, challenge your ideas, and provide dialogue. After the introduction with the graphic design class you can go into a web design class.

With web design it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL to start with a firm understanding of the basics. Learn how to script with HTML and CSS in a text editor first before creating websites in software like Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc. Once you get the basics under your belt you will be able to wield the software in more powerful ways. You will also need Photoshop to create graphic assets for your websites.

Software depends on personal preference, clients, and employer, but the major software packages that you’ll do well to learn include, Photoshop (image manipulation and creation), Illustrator (illustrations), Indesign (print design), Flash (animation and interactive media), After Affect (motion graphics), or Premiere (video editing). For the technical and software side of the disciplines, again nothing beats a class, but there are plenty of resources online, on cds, as well as in books.

http://www.webmonkey.com is a great resource for web scripting. http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp is dense for a beginner but is more comprehensive.

If you have the money but you don’t have the time for class take a look at http://www.lynda.com/ for excellent tutorials that will get you up to speed easily and quickly.

For a beginner learning software I suggest not going online. Books are a cheap and great starting point, because they will provide you with structured learning. I recommend the Visual Quick Start series published by Peachpit Press. They will walk you through step by step with illustrations and lessons. Once you have gotten enough basics to start creating your first website O’Reilly publishes excellent references. Check out "Web Design in a Nutshell." If you’re feeling a bit artsy and want to learn about the larger context of the digital realm read "Digital Art" by Christiane Paul.

GOOD LUCK!!

Is it important to have a military background to be a President?

I found it interesting because most people want to vote McCain because he has a military background since he was a POW. But does it really matter to have a President who has a military background? If so why? Don’t they have military advisers to advise him anyway? Personally, I think it is better that the President does not have any military background because then he/she can see the picture as a whole and he/she can analyze them in every different angle, not just in the military tactics only. But i would love to hear what you think.

NO, But lets see McCains experience?

Crashed 5 planes!

Came in at the bottom of his class!

Made 13 tapes for the Vietnamese against the USA!

I think I’ll go with Obama!

What are good alternatives to graphic design?

So i’ve been wanting to go into graphic design for about 6 years now, ever since i started doing that type of stuff. Im about to go into my second year of college, and I may be in a predicament. I took some art and design classes my first year, but all the next classes are restricted to Bachelor of Design/Fine Arts students, of which I was rejected to when i applied. I go to the university of alberta, and they have no other art courses for people who ARENT in said programs. I LOVE art (primarily graphic design), movies, music, and all forms of entertainment. I had to request to register for certain art classes, so i may not get them. So, upon NOT getting into them, i have to think of what i can do in the meantime, or even a different career. What are some ideas of good careers related to graphic design or my hobbies?

Oddly enough, you may find your talents/interests useful in computer science. There is a whole area called interface design, in which one tries to design a computer program or web page so that it is a) visually appealing and b) easy to use. This is not as easy as it sounds.

Industrial design would be another area. Again, the problem there is to make things that are esthetically appealing and also easy to use, or at least relatively intuitive.

There’s an area of psychology called human factors research. The emphasis in this research is making things useable and safe to use.

A very good writer who covers all of the above is Donald A. Norman. A quick perusal of the Edmonton Public Library catalogue reveals the following books by him:

Emotional design: why we love (or hate) everyday things.

The psychology of everyday things.

Turn signals are the facial expressions of automobiles.

Check out the following web sites as well:

http://www.asktog.com

http://www.useit.com

http://www.jnd.org/index.html

There’s a role out there for someone with an interest in design from an esthetic point of view who can also create designs that are useable by ordinary human beings. This is a fascinating area, and it’s interdisciplinary. Read one of Donald A. Norman’s books and take the time to read through the web sites above.

Hope this gives you an idea.
