an exploration of the process behind Purple geometric shapes when flying over Salt Lake City?
Both times when I flew into/out of Salt Lake City, I noticed large, purple geometrical shapes around the lake from the plane. I have never acutally been to SLC, only used the airport as a layover, so I am not familiar with the layout of the land. Any idea what type of landform I am looking at from the sky? Or is it just the way the water appears?
They’re probably the salt evaporation ponds, where they evaporate salt out of the Great Salt Lake. They are usually rectangular, and can be anything from a blue to a purple color. If you saw patches of red in the lake, those were brine shrimp like someone else mentioned.

How do I make image backgrounds transparent using Gimp?
I have a bunch of png images that I want to make transparent so that they won’t have that obnoxious white box around them. How would I go about doing this? I just downloaded Gimp since I know it can make images transparent somehow, and I have no idea how to work the program.
First, go to Layers > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Then use the the tool that looks like a wand to select the white background. Then hit the delete key. Keep doing this until finished and then save.

How do I get the Sibelius Scorch plugin in Linux?
I am trying to print off some sheet music that is only available in the Sibelius Scorch format from a website, but I cannot figure out how to get Sibelius Scorch onto my Linux computer. I tried installing to the Mozilla FIrefox plugin folder, but it still didnt work. Any suggestions?
I am using Firefox 3. Any other way besides downgrading? I really dont want to have to do that.
Some have gotten i to work using under wine in linux.

What photo editing software highlights just certain objects and leaves the others black and white?
I am wanting to purchase professional photo editing software that will help me highlight a certain object in the picture. Example: I want a black and white photo with only the blue eyes showing in color. What software should I buy and it this an easy task to accomplish?
In PhotoShop, you can select the blue eyes and then go to "Select" and inverse the selection. Now everything but the blue eyes will be selected. You then go under Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and desaturate everything. That will turn everything to black and white except the eyes.

OK, there’s an example for you. There are other ways to achieve this result, but I this worked really fast. You can also change the color — make everything black and white but give him red eyes.
What order should filters be placed in aquarium?
I have an Aqua One AR980 215lt tank which has an over head wet/dry filtration system filtering 1000lt per hour. It has three bins for filters and I have ceramic noodles, ammonia sponge, carbon sponge, cotton and a plain sponge. The water arrives at the top of the basket and leaves through the bottom. What order do you suggest I put the media in?

the other stuff ammonia sponge, carbon sponge is just ridiculous. its a waste of money, its a sponge peppered with material. if you want carbon or ammonia use granulated carbon and cranuladed ammonia chips. they last longer and work better than sponges.
all you need is one sponge to mechanically filter then biologically after. i personally dont use any chemical filtration, i advise using a sponge and filling the rest with biological media or those ceramic pieces.
why? its more stable, never requires changing or cleaning. all you have to do is clean the sponge.
