How to properly use camera lens filters?

I own a camera with several filters. I keep the UV filter on at all times. My question is, do I need to take off the UV filter before adding other filters? Basically, I would like to use ND filters and polarizing filters. I just don’t want to use them improperly and get bad results. Thanks.

Use one filter at a time.

The UV is there to protect your lenses front element from sticky fingers so you don’t have to clean it too much. Constant cleaning will eventually wipe away the special lens coating which needs to be avoided.

The ND and polarizing filer are for special uses only and after use need to be returned to the filters container to protect it as well while not in use.

Stacking filters can do two things. 1) further degrade the images and 2) cause vignetting if using them on wide angle lenses

How do I know if my gas mask filters are still good?

I recently bought a Czech m-10 gas mask and i have heard that sometimes the filters can have asbestos in them. The mask came with 2 filters, each sealed in a silver package with Czech writing on it. At this point, I’m just worried that the filters might have asbestos.
And after opened, how long will the filters last?

Nice purchase that’s a good mask, the filters do not contain any asbestos so you will be fine. the filters are only good mostly for tear gas, so I assume it probably won’t have the activated charcoal like and NBC would. if you open them they should last a while in clean air, in heavy tear gas/pepper spray maybe a few hours.

What is a good brand of film camera filters?

I’m new to film photography and I was wondering what is a really good brand of filters to use. I’ve done a little research and B+W filters always seem to have great reviews. What do you recommend?

yes, you are right. B+W is great filters. Additionally to the great glass they have a Bronze Rim (ring). Bronze thread is not damaging your lens – this is important.

How often should I change my fish tank filters?

I have a 45 gallon fish tank with 3 fancy goldfish. I have a Tetratec pf300 filter that has 4 filter cartridges in it. I got the tank and filter used and I’m not sure how often I should change the filters. I will not be adding anymore fish. Thanks!

Only when it is 100% necessary. I never rinse my filter media unless it is clogged and the water can’t run through. You don’t want to change it to a new one, because there are beneficial bacteria which are filtering your water in the filter media. Take some water from your tank and rinse it gently every 2 months or so. Never use tap water as it contains chlorine and will kill off your bacteria.

an explanation of how my filters work

ive had lots of questions about these, so i decided to address them today.

Q: how much did they cost you?
A:$250, minus media.

Q:were they hard to build?
A:no, not at all. took a little less than 2hrs start to finish.

Q:do they work well?
A:i studied the design for almost 6 months before building, so i hope so. its a combination of a few systems and designs ive seen over the years. simple, and effective.

heres the parts needed to replicate this system.
4-55 gallon barrels, doesnt matter about which top it has.
2-1″ bulkheads(for inlets)
6-1″ male adapters
2-1″ female adapters
2-1″ ball valves
3-2″/5′ long pvc pipe pieces
2-2″ elbows
8-hose clamps
1-100′ roll of 1″ pipe
1-tube of 100% silicone sealant.

and thats it, cost me 100 for the barrels, and 150 for fittings and pipe
if you want to build this, message me and ill send ya the entire build instructions for these.

What are the best filters for a 75 gallon goldfish tank?

I am purchasing a 75 gallon tank for my goldfish soon and I need to upgrade their filters with it. I want to get two filters. What are the different options and what does everyone suggest?
Brands would be helpful. Is one type of brand better than another?

I would get a Eheim 2217 and a Emperor 400.
This gives you a canister (Eheim 2217) for more than enough bio filtration, with mechanical. The Emperor (HOB) will help with even more mechanical, more bio, and it is easy to add chemical too, if you need or want it.

These will both provide surface movement so that gas exchange is not a problem. This also helps to keep protein build up on the surface to a minimum. This can be a issue with bigger tanks.

I like running the HOB with a canister because it will help to keep the tank clean. Plus running 2, means less cleaning of the filters themselves. The canister can go for 6 months or more, before you will need to open it and rinse off the media, and change the mechanical filtration. The HOB can go for just about as long too. Rather than using the disposable cartridges with them, get some blue bonded filter pad, and cut it to fit. This will give you mechanical filtration, that is easy to change as needed.

Eli Pariser: Beware online “filter bubbles”

http://www.ted.com As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there’s a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a “filter bubble” and don’t get exposed to information that could challenge or broaden our worldview. Eli Pariser argues powerfully that this will ultimately prove to be bad for us and bad for democracy.
