How To Draw!~ Graphic Design: The Creative Process – Illustration

This video shows the creative process from illustrating the human form to which will be used in a mixed media design that encourages high school students to consider taking art even though they might not have artistic ability. The message on the completed design poster says, “Inspiration doesn’t just come to you; you have to create inspiration.” So even though some very talented artists might make drawing and painting look easy, the Graphic Design industry is very different and really doesn’t have much to do with art at all. The brainstorming and thought process involved with making successful graphic design solutions as well as other fundamentals of design like Color Theory, Gestalt and Typography are all significant factors that go far beyond the mere ability to draw.

Further education about the Graphic Design industry is important for new students who have yet to discover what Graphic Design is and perhaps they might enjoy such a career if they are made aware of what is involved.

By the way, I like listening to Sarah Slean when I’m doing my work so I included her music in here. Also Amorphis ’cause they rock.

Is Graphic Design ALL about using computers or does drawing and illustration also play a part?

The thing is, i’m thinking of doing a graphic design course at uni but i’m not sure if i like the idea of using a computer like most of the time, so is there illustration, drawing etc involved in graphic design?

Most university graphic design courses will cover everything from computer design, print techniques and even packaging.

If you prefer, do a fine arts course which will include drawing, painting and photography and usually electives in things like sculpture, screen printing and ceramics.

Go to any university website and look for their course catalog, this will define exactly what courses you will be taking for the degree of your choice.

What’s the difference between graphic design, computer graphics, etc?

Okay, so a couple of my friends are going into graphic design and I plan on becoming an illustrator. What’s the difference between a graphic designer, someone who does computer graphics, media designer, and illustrator?
The thing is since I wanna be an illustrator, can I have more mediums than just pencil and paper? I wanna use drawing tablets and traditional stuff but I’m just not sure if I’ll be restricted or not :/ I’m really new to this….

Illustration is a specialist subset of graphic design.

You can use whatever media suits the job, bearing in mind that it will at some point have to be digitised.

So you can work in pen and ink or sculpture or any other stops in between, eventually you will have to photograph or scan your work. Or you can start with working at a computer. Or both.

You will have to know how to prepare scans or photographs to the standard required for print quality or web use or both.
